CWI and ByBorre re-invent partying with IoT, and I was part of the team!

During Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), CWI and textile studio BYBORRE have set the roadmap for the future of club culture at the exclusive Red Bull At Night Playrooms event. The guys at the Distributed and Interactive Systems (DIS) group have patched 600 attendees (x2 nights) with sensors embedded in beautiful wristbands designed by ByBorre. The sensors were seamlessly gathering and processing data from the attendees, understanding their experience and identifying their most meaningful moments. I was lucky enough to be part of the team that made this possible, and to witness in first person what IoT can contribute in creating WoW!, unforgettable experiences.

SIGMM Rising Stars (+ slides)

This year ACM Multimedia, the flagship conference of SIGMM, was held in Amsterdam, on October 15-19.

It was a wonderful event, full of inspiring talks, brave new ideas, workshop and tutorials and with an amazing demo session (have a look at the whole program here).

And then, there was the SIGMM Rising Star symposium, where I had the honor to be invited to speak, along with 5 others brilliant young scientists (you can see my friends Hayley Hung and Cynthia Liem in the picture above, which we took right after the symposium). It was a great session, full of inspiring talks on the Multimedia Research to come. If you are interested in my contribution, you can find the slides of my talk here: sigmm_rs_2016_jredi.

Multimedia Alternate Realities: AltMM @ACMMM 2016

This year ACM MM will host the very first workshop on Multimedia Alternate Realities: AltMM 2016!

I am the proud co-organizer of this new, exciting workshop, together with Teresa Chambel, Wei-Tsang Ooi, Omar Niamut and Rene Kaiser.

Please submit your awesome contribution! Deadline for full and short paper submission is July 1st, 2016. All info at:

Multimedia experiences allow us to access other worlds, to live other people’s stories, to communicate with or experience alternate realities. Different spaces, times or situations can be entered thanks to multimedia contents and systems, which coexist with our current reality, and are sometimes so vivid and engaging that we feel we are living in them. Advances in multimedia are making it possible to create immersive experiences that may involve the user in a different or augmented world, as an alternate reality.

AltMM 2016, the 1st International Workshop on Multimedia Alternate Realities at ACM Multimedia, aims at exploring how the synergy between multimedia technologies and effects can foster the creation of alternate realities and make their access an enriching, valuable and real experience. The workshop program will contain a combination of oral and invited keynote presentations, and poster, demo and discussion sessions, altogether enabling interactive scientific sharing and discussion between practitioners and researchers.

Special Session on Crowdsourcing at PQS

With Matthias Hirth (University of Würzburg) and Tim Polzehl, TU Berlin, we are organizing a Special Session on Crowdsourcing for Perceptual Quality of Systems at the 5th ISCA/DEGA Workshop on Perceptual Quality of Systems. All info here!

QoMEX special session on “User Factors in Multimedia Experiences”

Our proposal for a QoMEX 2016 Special Session on User factors in Multimedia Experiences has been accepted!

The goal is to better understand and capture individual differences in multimedia experience preferences. We seek for papers aiming at answering questions such as “which impact do user characteristics have on Quality of Experience?” and “How can these characteristics be captured, and their influence on (quality of) multimedia experiences modeled?”.

Are you working on subjective studies, field trials, as well as theoretical models of users and experience appreciation that target the questions above? We are looking forward to hearing (and reading) about it!

Deadline is March 11, 2016.

All details can be found here, and submission details here.

See you in Lisbon! 🙂
